Building a metrics platform for better transparency in If’s software operations

If Insurance wanted a shared, fact-based view of how their digital services perform in production, and how operational load changes across teams. To support better decision-making, If partnered with Polar Squad to design and deliver a modern metrics and reporting capability built on their Azure ecosystem.

Starting point

Operational data existed across many systems, but it wasn’t easy to combine or understand across teams. The goal was to create clear, trusted metrics that supportdaily operations and leadership planning.


Key goals included:

  • Visibility into production availability and SLA trends
  • Improved incident traceability via structured alert and availability analytics
  • Actionable DevOps flow metrics (lead time, cycle time, throughput, WIP) to make workload and bottlenecks visible
  • Consistent reporting across environments for reliable comparisons and governance

Solution

Polar Squad delivered a production-grade enterprise data lakehouse and dashboarding solution that brings operational and delivery metrics into one place.

Architecture & data platform

  • Azure Databricks lakehouse data storage and processing for reliable analytics
  • Integration with Azure Event Hubs for gathering application availability metrics and alerts

Pipelines and dashboards delivered

  • Data pipelines: Application availability checks, Azure Monitor alerts and Azure DevOps work items
  • Power BI dashboards enabling self-service visibility into availability/SLA and alert trends

Enterprise-grade delivery practices

  • Modular Infrastructure as Code in Azure Bicep and automated deployments through Azure DevOps pipelines
  • Multi-environment setup supporting controlled rollout and consistent governance
  • Automated Power BI deployment approach aligned with Microsoft Fabric practices

Results

The outcome was a new, shared operational “source of truth” that enabled more transparent, data-driven conversations across teams and leadership:
